Thousand Foot Krutch – The Art of Breaking

Rating: 5/5

Not many CDs that I listen to scream at me right from the first song that they’re a killer album. However, Thousand Foot Krutch’s new album The Art of Breaking is one of the few that does. I was initially sceptical of TFK’s new album before I got a chance to listen to it. The media hype stated that the sound had changed, they had lost the hip hop/rapcore sound to focus on pure rock. “Will this be a good thing?” I thought. After all, Phenomenon was a fantastic effort. Well my doubts were soon removed by The Art of Breaking – it is TFK’s best yet.

The first song, Absolute sets the ball rolling with their new sound. And the lyrics have to be the most powerful that TFK have written to date. “We want the truth, give us the absolute” screams their cry from this album – making a bold statement that they are a true Christian band, not half-baked like Lifehouse and P.O.D.

Rolling into track two, Slow Bleed, brings a mix of Pillar and Kutless. I wouldn’t rate Slow Bleed as the best on the album but it is still a good song. Title track The Art of Breaking is an absolute killer – a little bit of Limpin Park in the mix of the lyrics with “When I feel numb, I will let you know, I won’t become, what I was before.” It is one of my favourites on the new album, along with Absolute, it makes an awesome start to a brilliant rock album.

The next few tracks continue with TFK’s new metal/rock sound. Hurt is the highlight of these, with a really sweet sounding underlying drum and bass combination. Tracks seven, eight and nine sound a little like the TFK of Phenomenon, but the history lesson is ended on track 10. Track 11, is a slower rock melody that finishes the CD in the same powerful state as the start.

Overall I am really impressed with TFK’s The Art of Breaking. It’s defi nitely one for your CD collection if you’re into the metal/rock scene. If you listen hard the message between the lyrics is really powerful and regardless of whether you are a Christian or not this CD will appeal to your rock buds.
